If you are an adult who believes that using Snapchat before turning 18 negatively impacted your mental or physical health within the past ten years, or if you are the parent of a child under the age of 18 and believe that Snapchat has negatively impacted their mental or physical health within the past ten years, you or your child may qualify for a claim under federal and state laws and be entitled to monetary damages for pain and suffering, as well as reimbursement for medical treatment.
There is an increasing amount of scientific evidence of social media’s negative effects on mental health, especially adolescent mental health.
This claim alleges that when Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, designed its Snapchat product, it:
- Developed a defective product despite knowing it posed risks to users under the age of 18 mental health.
- Failed to adequately warn users under the age of 18 about the potential for addiction and other associated harms from using Snapchat.
- Neglected its responsibility to create a safe product.
- Engaged in deceptive business practices that concealed Snapchat’s addictive features.
Hundreds of Americans are currently involved in lawsuits against social media companies, including Snapchat, for causing social media addiction and harm through the design of their platforms. Additional lawsuits against Snapchat include actions brought by school districts and state attorneys general. More than 200 U.S. school districts have filed consolidated lawsuits against major social media companies, including Snap Inc., alleging that Snapchat’s addictive, engagement-driven features have contributed to a youth mental health crisis and imposed significant burdens on public education systems.
Snap Inc. has also been sued by the state of Utah, which alleges that Snapchat’s design features are addictive to children, harm their mental health and well-being, and facilitate additional risks such as exposure to illegal drug sales and exploitation. The Utah complaint asserts that Snapchat was intentionally structured to “hook” young users and that Snap misrepresented the safety of its platform in violation of state consumer protection and privacy laws.
These lawsuits further allege that Snap intentionally designed Snapchat to maximize user engagement, particularly among adolescents and teens, despite knowing of its addictive potential, and failed to warn users of the resulting mental and physical harms. Plaintiffs claim that excessive Snapchat use has caused serious injuries, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, eating disorders, low self-esteem, educational interference, and exposure to cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and sexual harassment facilitated by the platform’s design.
