This is a case about data privacy. Dating sites OkCupid, Hinge, Tinder, Match.com, Plenty of Fish, OurTime, Chispa, and BLK, all of which are owned by Match Group, Inc., violate the privacy of its users by collecting biometric data (i.e. your face scan) that they should not be collecting without first notifying their users and obtaining written consent. The biometric data collected by these dating sites is in the form of a face scan, which is unique to individuals – no two individuals have the same one. Because this data is so unique and only a match to you, there are heightened protections around it. These dating sites have ignored the protections implemented by Illinois lawmakers through their collection of users’ biometric data without first notifying those users and obtaining their written consent.
